# What is BaseScan?

[BaseScan](https://basescan.org/) is the block explorer for Base, built and operated by Team Etherscan.

A block explorer is a search engine for blockchain data. BaseScan indexes Base’s public ledger and lets users look up transactions, addresses, blocks, tokens, and smart contracts. It can be used to confirm transaction status, review wallet activity, track token transfers, and inspect verified contract code.

BaseScan provides a clear view of activity on Base but does not process or control transactions. It is not a wallet or brokerage service, does not store private keys or hold funds, and cannot reverse transactions or recover lost assets.

Base will also be supported by the [Etherscan API](https://docs.etherscan.io/introduction). Developers will be able to access its onchain data (including balances, transactions, token transfers, contract source code, logs, gas data, and network statistics) using an Etherscan API key and the network’s `chainid: 8453`.

Developers and AI agents will also be able to work with Base data through Etherscan’s [Build with AI](https://docs.etherscan.io/build-with-ai/introduction) resources. These include the official Etherscan MCP server, the Etherscan CLI, reusable skills, and machine-readable documentation for integrating live onchain data into applications and automated workflows.

BaseScan’s purpose is to make activity on Base transparent, searchable, and accessible to users, developers, and researchers.
