What could happen to supermajority client validators if a critical bug leads to the finalization of an invalid chain during a fork?
In the event of a critical bug in a supermajority client leading to the finalization of an invalid chain during a fork, the validators running a supermajority client will:
- Be considered as inactive on the valid chain, and suffer from an inactivity leak
- Be slashed if they doubly attest to blocks on the valid chain & invalid chain
- Get stuck in the valid chain's exit queue (due to the churn limit) while continue losing ETH from inactivity leak
- Risk losing majority of their staked ETH so that their stake represent less than 1/3 of the total ETH staked on Ethereum
